“Analytics for insight and action.” That’s the essence of so many oft-cited W. Edwards Deming quips. Data without insights is meaningless; insights without action are pointless.
In every sense of this guiding theme, the Analytics Forum promises to deliver sessions at the intersection of the very latest in generative AI, data science, and visual information design to inspire action, smarter decisions, and better business outcomes. Read on for a handful of the top advanced analytics megatrends woven throughout the planned agenda, which is loaded with industry-leading customers and Spotfire breakouts:
- Data science at scale
- Model explainability
- Visual information design
- Low/no-code analytics applications
- Geospatial analytics
Data Science At Scale
Data scientists are using the Python and R languages to great effect, scaling their efforts across their organizations for data prep, feature engineering, machine learning, geoanalytics, and stats. It’s time to scale trusted data science further and wider for more business analysts to leverage.
Spotfire analytics makes it simple for non-developers to add pre-built Python and R Data Functions to Spotfire analyses and visual analytics applications. Multiple sessions explain how to create pinnable Data Functions ready for business analysts to grab and go with fully governed data science building block assets. While some decisions have made strides in automation, several still include humans in the loop as in today’s leading human-centered AI approaches across both commercial business proof of concepts as well as academia.

Model Explainability, Observability, Responsible AI (*including*, however not limited to, Large Language Models)
While so many processes can be automated through machine learning and statistical process, “human-in-the-loop” decision models are certainly not going anywhere. Despite what the media hype machine will have you believe about the autonomy of AI, humans still have very active roles to play in tweaking or tuning models for bias, retraining, and monitoring for model drift. Through automation, native Python packages accelerate results activating trusted AI through augmented, point-and-click visual data science.

Visual Information Design
Noted interaction and design expert Jan Willem Tulp will join Spotfire Chief Analytics Officer Michael O’Connell for an interesting keynote discussion about the discovery process, his portfolio of Javascript work across network science, and best practices for how to illuminate insights from fascinating scientific topics to life through visualization in relatable ways that audiences are able to comprehend.
In addition to sessions about design and data discovery, TAF will feature sessions about Spotfire Mods visualizations. Since the time it was initially introduced over two years ago, the Spotfire Mods framework has offered a flexible, lightweight, secure means for developing Javascript extensions natively in the platform. The Mods framework has enabled the development of such visualizations as the Weather Mod, Sankey Diagram Mod, Network Chart Mod, and dozens more.
Each looks, feels, and interacts just like any other native brush-linked Spotfire visualization Several are published, certified, and freely available to download from the Exchange on the Community.

Actionable Insights with Custom Low and No-code Analytics Apps
One fundamental challenge that still remains in business intelligence today: insights aren’t actionable when or where most decision makers need them—and that’s in the moment of decision.
A session on Spotfire Actions will show how to bridge the gap between business insights and decisions, accelerating outcomes by triggering seamless transactions from your BI platform to any of the operational business systems where knowledge workers actually live. With a no-code, write-back solution to any cloud or on-premises application, you can create an alert to your CRM and update your data warehouse—ALL directly from a data visualization.
Whether automating updates from streaming data sources in real time or from human-triggered action workflows, both human-in-the-loop monitoring and continuously automated decisions become more efficient, and BI tools expand into true analytics apps as a decision and control hub for business operations. When action is taken closer in proximity to where business processes are performed—WITHIN business units by knowledge workers—more value is delivered, resulting in higher-quality process improvements. Word has it that there’s an Actions demo in the works with Spotfire and Google Drive!

Exploring the Limits of Geospatial
Geoanalytics have long been a hallmark of Spotfire exploration across various industries. Multi-layered map charts allow for drilling down on models between layers, and they now work in tandem with several new pre-packaged Data Functions mentioned above. When driven by Data Functions under the hood, all Spotfire maps are dynamically interactive, able to refresh data and reflect real-time analysis. Calculations between layers allow for running predictions on event streams for no-code, real-time data science exploration, powered by the native engines for Python and R.
Additionally, Spotfire’s mapping capabilities will be on full display in the self-paced Hackathon. Spotfire’s very own Data Science team will enable participants to study, analyze, and glean geospatial insights on Houston “food deserts”—areas where there’s limited access to affordable, nutritious fresh food.
