What if you could ask Spotfire, “What is the best-selling product and its quarterly revenue” in this dashboard? Or, after installation, ask right inside Spotfire, “How do I add a new Python library?” Now you can with the Spotfire Copilot™ AI tool, a free, natural language extension to the Spotfire® platform. With the Spotfire Copilot add-on, we are offering our vast user community a modern and intuitive experience inside the product.
What is generative AI?
The Spotfire Copilot tool was created with the future of work in mind. McKinsey Global Institute reports that “With generative AI added to the picture, 30 percent of hours worked today could be automated by 2030.”
Generative AI uses machine learning algorithms to produce content like text, images, code, music—whatever you train it on. Spotfire data scientists define generative AI as “a type of AI system that generates text, images, and other outputs in response to prompts. Since the end of 2022, this largely refers to a new AI era.”
Spotfire is excited to be entering into this new generative AI era with this recent AI-focused add-on, which you can download for free from the Community. Just like other Spotfire extensions, any Spotfire user can stand up their own private instance of the Spotfire Copilot tool. While the Copilot tool was developed with the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, the rest of the software can run agnostically anywhere you desire.
How does it work in Spotfire?
The Spotfire Copilot tool leverages large language models to augment business intelligence and artificial intelligence, all in Spotfire. It acts as an assistant directly within Spotfire to empower various Spotfire users to get more done with their data faster.
With the add-on, you can accomplish tasks like:
- Performing an operation in Spotfire
- Explaining the structure of your loaded data
- Modifying or creating visualizations
- Explaining visualizations
- Creating a data function

Why try the free extension?
Most major LLMs, including ChatGPT, are currently limited to producing text responses. However, Spotfire users are interested in automating and maintaining Spotfire dashboards composed of visuals. To best meet your needs, the Copilot add-on has now evolved to a conversational chatbot with advanced natural language query abilities to answer analytics questions, produce innate Spotfire visuals, narrate charts, create Spotfire Data Functions, answer questions based on loaded proprietary documents privately, and perform Spotfire operations.
Spotfire Copilot AI tool can help seasoned Spotfire users have a head start in generating charts, data views, or reports. It also can help novice users to have a significantly shorter learning curve through natural language interactions with Spotfire. Similar to the driver assist features in modern cars where the driver needs to have their hands on the wheel, the Spotfire user has to vet the results for accuracy.
By using the power of artificial intelligence at your fingertips, you can discover insights faster and speed your workflows like never before. In high-tech manufacturing, you could ask the Copilot tool to explain the reasons for a decline in yield or identify the root cause of equipment failure. In life sciences, you may run into chemical process parameters that look unfamiliar; using the Spotfire Copilot tool, you can tap into internal proprietary documents that include such definitions right inside Spotfire—in a private and secure manner. Or in the oil and gas industry, the Copilot tool could help you use your data to discover information about a formation pressure breakdown in an oil rig.
Speed your Spotfire workflows
